by Scott Jacobs, Managing Editor
This year's Consumer Electronics Show offered alittle something for everyone - strategists, planners, executors, and analysts.

Conference tracks, such as Digital Hollywood (one of the several educational tracks available) complemented the trends on display at the booths which covered the Sands Expo Center, Las Vegas Hilton, and Las Vegas Convention Center.

Attendees could attend keynotes of such luminaries as Bill Gates, Yahoo's Jerry Yang, and a cable executive for the first time, Comcast's Brian Roberts. Comcast joined with Panasonic to facilitate the Tru2way cablebox standard - including a portable DVR.

Companies competed for Best of Show accolades in their respective product categories. Pictured is Belkin's 4-track Audio Mixer for recording direct to iPod.
The 59th Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards were presented concomitantly to the CES.

Legendary, moon-walking astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, 77, was a featured presenter in this new area honoring interactive accomplishments, past and present.

Award recipients (pictured here) included Bill Budge, creator of Pinball Construction Set in 1983 (evolved to Virtual Pinball for the Sega Genesis), and Don Daglow, designer of Neverwinter Nights (1991-1997) the first graphical MMORPG. (Photos: Scott Jacobs).

Among the innovations introduced at the show were several improvements in camcorders. Canon's new models - the Vixia HF100, Vixia HF10, and Vixia HV30 prosumer camcorder with a 30P (progressive) shooting mode.
“It won’t affect the speed of uploading [online video], as much as it will improve the quality of the viewing experience and the quality of being able to pause or extract a still image from motion video, said Mike Zorich, Marketing Director of the Video Division of Consumer Imaging Group at Canon. “It really increases the functionality of how you can use it. If you shoot in 30P, you’ve got smoother playback on your computer screen…and cleaner resolution photos,” he said. Watch CamcorderInfo's Richard Bagley's review of the HF-10 ($1099).

Online Poker Cheating Blamed on Employee

Mike Brunker at MSNBC writes:

In a case that illustrates the perils of online betting, a leading Internet poker site said Friday that a hacker exploited a security flaw to gain an insurmountable edge in high-stakes, no-limit Texas holdem tournaments — the ability to see his opponents’ hole cards.

The cheater, whose illegitimate winnings were estimated at between $400,000 and $700,000 by one victim, was an employee of AbsolutePoker.com who hacked the system to show that it could be done, said a spokesman for the company, who spoke with msnbc.com on condition of anonymity.

“This is literally a geek trying to prove to senior management that they were wrong and he took it too far,” he said.
